Three Rivers Academy Student/Parent Handbook Mission

The purpose of Three Rivers Academy is to provide a quality education for boys and girls of average and above average intelligence. The goal at Three Rivers is academic excellence and social growth and development for its students. We strive to accomplish our purpose and goal by providing an atmosphere which is conducive to learning and by employing a well-qualified faculty. Three Rivers Academy has an accelerated curriculum and uses only grade level and advanced textbooks. The electives offered and extracurricular programs are designed to complement and strengthen the academic program and to provide every student with the opportunity to be involved in a school activity outside the classroom.

Beliefs: Each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs. A safe and physically comfortable environment promotes student learning. Students learn best when they have appropriate opportunities for success and can apply their learning in meaningful contexts. Students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process through a variety of instructional approaches that support their learning. Students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of essential knowledge and skills and be actively involved in solving problems and producing quality work. Assessments of student learning should be consistent and include a variety of challenging methods that will not only demonstrate their achievements but increase their individual performance. There should be an understanding that consistent discipline procedures between the home and school is an important process of maintaining student order and mutual respect. The commitment to continuous improvement is imperative in our school if it is going to enable students to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN GOALS

The following goals were established by the school community. The goals were created based upon school community input and are aligned with the school's mission statement. They focus on improving student achievement in the areas of academics, character development, and athletics. Over the next five years, Three Rivers will pursue these three goals. Parents are encouraged to participate in the school improvement process as much as possible.

Goal 1: Personal and Social Responsibility- Students will demonstrate increased levels of respect toward faculty, staff, and property.

Goal 2: Expanding and Integrating Technology- Students will demonstrate integrated knowledge in applying research and presentation skills.

Goal 3: Thinking and Reasoning Skills- Students will improve cognitive learning by applying higher-order thinking skills.

NOTICE OF NONDISCRIMINATORY POLICY

Three Rivers Academy seeks students from all ethnic, cultural, racial, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds who can benefit from a challenging academic program and make positive contributions to the school community. Students are considered for admissions on the basis of, but not limited to, academic achievement, academic testing, attendance record, teacher evaluations, and administrator evaluation. Other factors that are considered include co-curricular interests, talents, classroom scheduling capabilities, and space availability. As a private independent school, Three Rivers Academy reserves the right to deny admission to any student. Further, Three Rivers reserves the right to ask any student to leave at any time for any reason when the administration believes it is in the best interest of the school; this also includes the right not to allow students to return for the next school year.

PARENT COMMUNICATION

Three Rivers Academy utilizes several methods of parent communication. The staff and faculty are dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of communications with parents.

E-mail/Internet - Three Rivers considers electronic mail as an official form of communication to parents and utilizes email as the primary means of communication with parents. Internet access and e-mail capability are required for effective communication with Three Rivers. Parents can be kept informed concerning Three Rivers activities and programs by frequently reviewing the web site at www.threeriversacademy.org The board of directors may be reached at their e-mail address at threeriversboard@yahoo.com.  The school administration may be reached at  threeriversacademy@yahoo.com.

Divorced Parents- The Code of Alabama 30-3-154 (2005) states: “Unless otherwise prohibited by court order or statute, all records and information pertaining to the child, including, but not limited to, medical, physiological, dental, scholastic, athletic, extracurricular, and law enforcement, shall be equally available to both parents, in all types of custody arrangements.” Parents who are divorced must provide legal documents to verify child custody and other child/parent restrictions. Unless there is legal documentation that nullifies the standard custodial/non-custodial order in a divorce situation, Three Rivers will abide by the Code of Alabama as stated above. It is the responsibility of the non-custodial parent to keep Three Rivers fully informed concerning expectations for school information pertaining to their child.

Ed Line- Ed Line is a web based resource that interfaces with the Three Rivers database. Upon the beginning of the school year or within two (2) weeks of enrollment at Three Rivers, parents are issued an Ed Line account. Accounts should be immediately activated upon receipt. Ed Line allows students/parents/guardians to remain up to date on academic progress.

Web Pages- All faculty maintain a web page for the convenience of students and parents/guardians. This web page is updated once a week with the faculty members’ lesson plans or assignments for the week. Grade Reports- Grade reports are for the purpose of communicating on Ed Line an evaluation of student progress to the student and his/her parent/guardian. Teachers update these grade reports weekly and are available for parent review on the student’s Ed Line account.

Report Cards- 9-week report cards and semester grade reports will be sent home. The 9-week reporting periods are shown on the school calendar.

Conferences-Scheduled conferences are encouraged between parents and teachers. If you would like to schedule an appointment with your student's teacher, please e-mail the teacher or call and leave a message for the teacher to return your call with the front office. The teacher will answer your e-mail or return your call and schedule a convenient meeting time. Conferences are held prior to school hours and after school hours. Please provide at least a two (2) day notification to your student's teacher. Prior planning allows for the teacher to prepare and gather information to address concerns that you have regarding your student's academic performance.

Aggressive Parents- Code of Alabama 1975 Section 16-28-A-1 states the following: “The school system shall provide assistance for seeking the issuance of a warrant or warrants for any person or persons threatening or assaulting an administrator or teacher, and timely assistance with appropriate authorities in the prosecution of any person or persons threatening or assaulting an administrator or teacher.” Parents that are verbally and/or physically aggressive and/or are overly argumentative will be asked to withdraw their student immediately from Three Rivers Academy.

Student/Parent Complaint and Grievances The primary purpose of this procedure is to provide prompt and equitable resolution of student/parents' complaints and grievances.

Level One- The resolution of a grievance through free and informal communications as close as possible to the point of origin is encouraged. Students are encouraged to consult with the administration for conflict resolution.

Level Two- After the student/parent and teacher have met and there is no resolution and both parties have been informed of further resolution procedures, the aggrieved student/parent may consult with the headmaster.

Returning Student Registration

Each student’s record will be reviewed at the end of each academic year to determine whether the student is eligible to return to Three Rivers Academy. The records used are those which have been available to the parents throughout the school year (i.e., report cards, conduct records, and formal correspondence with the parents concerning academic or disciplinary matters). Parents will be notified by conference and follow up letter when the decision has been made that their student is not eligible to return to Three Rivers.

CODE OF CONDUCT

By enrolling at Three Rivers Academy, students and parents/guardians are agreeing to adhere to a Code of Conduct. Parents must understand that their family becomes part of the Three Rivers family and represent that family by their actions both on and off campus. As a student at Three Rivers Academy, each student is expected to be a moral, law abiding citizen and represent the school following those ideal at all times; therefore, student behavior on or off campus (during school or non-school hours) that is illicit, immoral, illegal, or in any manner reflects adversely on Three Rivers can cause immediate expulsion. Three Rivers Academy believes that it is necessary to publish what is expected in key areas so that everyone understands expected behavior. While it is not reasonable to attempt to list all behaviors that may be unacceptable, the following paragraphs will outline major areas of conduct. A detailed disciplinary policy outlining consequences for unacceptable behavior is outlined in the Behavior and Discipline section of this handbook. Those students who choose to attend Three Rivers will accept all standards, regulations, and requirements. Three Rivers feels strongly about helping each student become a more responsible leader, one who understands the sincere need for respect for authority, property, government, peers, and self. Three Rivers Academy will work to strengthen every student in these areas. Students must understand that although they have freedom of choice, they do not have freedom from the consequences of their actions.

Guiding principles at Three Rivers Academy:

1. Responsibility to Others Students are expected to conduct themselves in a responsible manner at all times, always giving consideration to others first. Both on and off Three Rivers' grounds, students are to maintain the highest standards of respect for teachers, faculty, staff, parents, other adults, and fellow students.

2. Responsibility for Property Students are expected to act responsibly regarding property, whether it is property of Three Rivers Academy, others, or their own. Any behavior which may damage or deface property is forbidden and will be dealt with accordingly. Parents will be held financially responsible for loss or damage to Three Rivers' property.

Any action which jeopardizes the safety of another student, whether deliberate or not, will receive immediate attention and disciplinary action.

5. Profanity, Obscenity, and Vulgar Language or Conduct Students must speak and act in keeping with polite societal standards, and must not interfere with the educational process. Profane, obscene and vulgar language, gestures, conduct and material are strictly prohibited. Students violating this policy will receive immediate disciplinary action.

Failure to do so will affect the student’s academic standing and may result in disciplinary action.

10. Public Displays of Affection “No contact.” Students are prohibited from all public displays of affection such as kissing, hand holding, arms around the waist, arms around shoulders, etc., at school, on school grounds and/or Three Rivers' events.

BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE

Although Three Rivers has no power to force thoughts or beliefs upon students, it must be able to control students' behavior. The faculty and administration of Three Rivers Academy have the responsibility and authority to correct students’ inappropriate behavior in order to maintain a quality learning environment. At Three Rivers, discipline is designed to achieve appropriate behavior while teaching students character and self-discipline. In order to prepare students for college, Three Rivers Academy must establish and maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. The establishment of such an atmosphere rests upon each student’s readiness to assume responsibility for his or her own actions and to meet the demands of a productive educational environment. Students at Three Rivers Academy are expected to conduct themselves in the appropriate manner whether at school or any school related event. Students are responsible for their compliance with standards and for consequences of their misconduct. Inappropriate conduct will be dealt with in a manner suitable to the seriousness of the offense. Behavioral violations are grouped into three classes: Minor, Intermediate, and Major. Minor offenses will normally be dealt with by the faculty/staff member that notes the violation. Intermediate and major offenses require that the student be brought to the office for action. When a student is referred to the headmaster for disciplinary reasons, the headmaster will hear the student’s explanation and may consult with other involved parties and school personnel, if necessary, before determining the classification of violation and appropriate disciplinary measure. A headmaster referral will result in one or more of the following actions being taken: conference with student, conference with student and parents, before-school detention, Saturday detention, work detail, out-of-school suspension, mandatory off-campus counseling or expulsion. After School Detention (BSD)- occurs at 3:30 p.m. on designated school days. A student assigned BSD will report to the before school detention room not later than 3:30 p.m. The student will be under the supervision of a designated faculty/staff member.

Saturday Detention- occurs at Three Rivers Academy on designated Saturday mornings from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. Students will be supervised by a detention monitor who will ensure completion of work details as deemed appropriate. Parents/Guardians will be responsible for paying a fee of $35.00 if a student is given Saturday Detention. This fee is to be paid directly to the detention monitor to cover their having to work on Saturday.

Work Detail- is the assignment of school/grounds housekeeping chores for a specified time period. Work detail is after school. The student will be under the supervision of the Three Rivers Academy custodian or detention monitor and will perform duties as assigned.

In-School Suspension is the removal of the student from the classroom for a specified time period. Parents will be notified of in-school suspension determination. Suspension is considered an unexcused absence from school. Teachers will not provide make-up work or examinations for students who have been assigned in-school suspension. Teachers, at their discretion, may require suspended students to make up homework, class work, etc. on a non-credit basis in order to help such students maintain academic pace.

Mandatory Off-Campus Assessment may be required when determined by the headmaster. When counselor assessment is determined as a necessary step following a principal referral, parents will provide documentation of the assessment completed by a qualified mental health professional to the principal within the time frame designated. Failure to comply with counseling assessment requirements will result in expulsion. Expulsion is the permanent removal of a student from Three Rivers Academy. Three Rivers Academy reserves the right to ask any student to leave at any time for any reason when the administration believes it is in the best interest of the school. Parents will be notified of expulsion determination in writing. Any student expelled from Three Rivers may not attend any school functions. A Conduct Form will be used to document the minor offenses listed below. Students will be given this form by the faculty/staff member reporting the violation. The form must be taken home by the student, signed by a parent, and returned to the teacher on the day following the issuance. Failure to return the signed discipline form on the day following issuance will be considered a minor offense with appropriate action being taken. Minor offenses not listed below will be dealt with immediately by the faculty member as deemed appropriate. **Sports activities may not take priority over a disciplinary action.**

A Headmaster Referral Form will be used to document all intermediate and major offenses. Parents will be notified of the violation as part of the mandatory contact that will occur following intermediate and major conduct violations. From the beginning of a student’s academic experience at TRA, faculty and staff members will be focused on providing them with the best possible academic programs that combine with spiritual and athletic programs to facilitate future success.

Grading Scale

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 64-69

F = 0-63

I = Incomplete All regular classes carry a 4.0 weight for GPA (Grade Point Average). All classes designated as AP (Advanced Placement), concurrent enrollment, and dual enrollment classes will carry a 5.0 weight to be calculated for GPA.

Homework- It is the general philosophy of Three Rivers Academy that homework, when effectively utilized, is designed to extend the academic curriculum and create practice opportunities which move students to mastery. Homework is an independent activity to be accomplished outside of the school day. Some homework may require parental assistance. Unfinished class work or make up work due to an absence must be completed but is not considered homework. Students will be assigned a reasonable amount of homework to include outside of class readings, projects, papers, essays, or other assignments, each night. Advanced placement, dual enrollment, and concurrent classes are taught at freshman college level, and the student should expect significant assignments and readings to be done out of class. Parents having questions or concerns about homework should communicate promptly with the teacher.

Late Work- Late work is defined as any work that is not received by the teacher by the beginning of class on the date the assignment is due. Teachers will post their specific late work policy on their web page. Mid Term and Final Exams- For grades 7-8, semester exams count as two test grades and cover one semester in order to help the transition between junior high and high school. In grades 9-12, semester exams count 20% of the semester grade. The following guidelines apply to final exams:

1. In grades 7-12, no make up tests will be permitted unless it is established that the student has a legitimate reason for missing the exam. If one can not present a legitimate reason for missing an exam, a zero will be given for the test. A personal consultation with parent(s)/guardian(s) may be required in questionable cases.

2. Final exams will be scheduled and given the last week of the school calendar. No school activities are to be scheduled the night before or during a final exam for the first and second terms.

3. First semester exams – There will be no exemptions from exams for students in grades 7-11. All students take semester exams except grade 12. Twelfth grade students may exempt 1 core exam and electives if they have an “A” for the semester average (1st and 2nd nine-weeks average combined for an A) and have no more than 5 absences from the class (to include excused and unexcused tardies and absences).

4. Second semester exams – All students in grades 7-12 may exempt any exam in which the student has an “A” average (3rd and 4th nine-weeks average combine for an “A”) and has no more than 5 absences from a class (to include excused and unexcused tardies and absences). **All exemptions can be nullified due to poor conduct in the classroom as determined by the administration with teacher input.**

Graduation Requirements Students attending Three Rivers Academy from 9-12 grades must earn the appropriate credits for the diploma track selected: Standard Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Advanced Honors Diploma. 5. The first dose of new medications MUST be given at home, with the exception of emergency medications; e.g., EpiPen injections.

6. Parents are responsible for picking up any remaining medications at the end of the school term or when medicine has been discontinued.

A school official will dispose of medications left at the school. Over-the-Counter Medications

1. Three Rivers Academy will not stock bottles of OTC medications in the office such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Neosporin, Cortisone Cream, Benadryl Cream, etc. These medications must be provided by the parent for their children, and a completed OTC authorization with specific dosing instructions kept on file in the office. Parents of multiple children may bring one bottle as long as the medication is age-appropriate for all children in that family.

2. For storage reasons, please bring the smallest container of Tylenol, etc. to be kept for your child(ren). All medications brought in by parents for their child(ren) will be kept in a locked cabinet in the office, and will be used only for your child(ren). Small bottles, packets or tubes of Tylenol or Ibuprofen sufficient for a 9 week period are recommended.

3. All OTC medications must be age-appropriate and up-to-date. Please check the expiration date before sending medications to school.

4. For safety reasons, all OTC medications must be in the original, unopened container, must show dosage directions by the manufacturer, and must be clearly marked with the child’s name. For example; if you bring in sinus medication for your child(ren), the medication should be in the original box so that all the manufacturer’s directions and warnings are visible. No pills or tablets will be accepted or given if brought in loose in a Ziploc bag.

5. All medications whether prescription or OTC, must be checked in at the front office.

6. The nurse may not administer aspirin or any aspirin-containing product without specific physician permission. Aspirin usage by children and adolescents has been associated with the rare, but often fatal disorder, REYE’S SYNDROME. Even Pepto-Bismol, which contains salicylate, an aspirin-like compound, must be given with caution. Children’s chewable Pepto does not contain any aspirin, but regular Pepto Bismol tablets (for ages 12 and up) contain salicylate.

7. Absolutely no Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or other OTC medication will be given if the child(ren) does not have their own bottle in the office and a completed parent authorization on file. Regular Benadryl and Benadryl cream will be kept in the office for emergency use only, and will not be given for allergy symptoms such as runny noses, etc.

8. Parents are to notify the school nurse or principal if, for any reason, the student has been prescribed a narcotic medication that will be taken before school which could alter the student’s ability to learn and/or concentrate on school work.

Immunizations According to Alabama Law (Section 16-30-4, Code of Alabama), each pupil shall present an Alabama Certificate of Immunization upon enrollment. These certificates may be obtained from your local physician or Health Department. All students entering kindergarten are required to have a Measles and Chicken Pox Certificate of Immunization. Immunizations will be checked periodically by the school nurse. Parents will be notified if any student is found to have an expired immunization record. In the case of an expired immunization record, parents will have thirty (30) days to return a current immunization record. Requirements for Self Administration of Asthma Medications or Other Breathing Medications by Students The self administration of the asthma and other breathing related illness medications by a student shall be permitted if the parent or legal guardian of the student provides the following information:

1. Written and signed authorization for the self administration to the headmaster.

2. Written and signed acknowledgement that the school shall bear no liability and that the parent or legal guardian shall indemnify and hold harmless the school and its employees, representatives, directors, agents, or assigns of the school against any claims that may arise relating to the self administration of asthma or other breathing related illness medications.

3. Written medical authorization to the Three Rivers Academy office to confirm the following: a. that the student has been instructed in the proper self administration of the medication. b. the name of the medication, purpose of the medication, dosage, frequency of use, special instructions or circumstances under which the medication should be administered, and the length of time for which the medication is prescribed shall be identified. Once all required documentation has been received by the office and acknowledged by the headmaster, it shall be dated and permission shall be granted for only the current school year in which permission was granted. Permission for subsequent years shall be granted provided all requirements and regulations are satisfied. Upon obtaining permission to self-administer asthma and other breathing related medications pursuant to these guidelines, the student shall be permitted to possess and self-administer approved asthma and other breathing related diseases. Students are expected to assume responsibility for their own lockers and are encouraged to keep them locked (giving no one the combination) at all times. Damage to lockers are the responsibility of the student. Parents will be charged for any damage.

SECURITY

2. All visitors must obtain a “pass” in the office immediately upon entering the buildings. A visitor is anyone not recognized as an employee of the school.

3. No visitors on campus for students (to include lunch time) unless approved by the headmaster. Teachers will receive notification of a visitor to a classroom from the office. Alumni visiting the school are to visit the front office to obtain a pass. The office will contact the administration prior to issuing the pass. Teachers must inform the office if they are to have a guest speaker in their classrooms.

4. Classroom doors will remain locked during the school day when children are in the classroom. No visitors will be admitted into the classroom without presentation of a “pass”.

5. Halls will be supervised during class changes. Students must become their “brother’s keepers”. They must alert a teacher or other person in authority when a fellow student is struggling and/or shows signs of desperation.

Instructions for evacuating the building, including the location to which teachers and students should go, will be posted in each classroom. During these drills (or in the event of an actual emergency), students must keep in line, stay together, walk (no running), and remain silent. Students are to remain with their classes throughout the drill. Weather Watches/Warnings In the event a weather watch is issued, the headmaster and the office will closely monitor its location and will take action accordingly. If a tornado watch is in effect at the end of the regular school day, school will dismiss as usual. In the event a weather warning is issued, the headmaster or designee will take action immediately following the school action plan. Under a tornado warning, students will not be released via regular transportation plans (cars) provided the warning is in effect at the time set for normal school activities, EXCEPT that students may be released to student's parent/guardian, provided said parent/guardian comes to the school to assume custody for his/her child. School Lockdown In the case of any danger outside or inside the school, or when notified by law enforcement agencies, a school-wide lockdown may be required. All staff members have been trained on detailed procedures that ensure the safety and security of all students during a lockdown. Once the building is locked down, no one will be allowed to enter or leave the school building for any reason until the "all clear" is given.

This form must be signed and returned before a student will be permitted to participate in any field trip. “Phone permission” is not acceptable. In some cases, a field trip may be a required assignment for a class grade. Those students not participating may be required to complete an alternate assignment. SCHOOL/OFFICE HOURS AND TUITION/FEES PAYMENT

School Hours of Operation The office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pre K -6 classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:05 p.m. 7-12 classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m. Tuition and Fees Payment Each year parents will receive a Tuition/Fee Contract that outlines their financial obligation for the school year regarding tuition and fees. Monthly invoices and/or statements of account will be sent home with students on the last school day of the month. Each family will name a responsible party for their student’s account. Financial transactions should normally be handled with the office. Tuition payments are due on the first of each month. Any payment received after the 10th of each month will automatically be charged a late fee of $25.00. Any payments not made by the 20th of the month will result in an additional $50.00 late fee. Please add this fee to your payment if you know it will be late. If the late date falls on a weekend or a holiday, the payment is due the Friday before. The school cannot be responsible for the promptness of the U. S. Postal Service or any checks sent with students through their teachers. The safest way to have payments credited correctly and on time is to drop them off personally in the office tuition box. There is a $40.00 returned check fee charge for any check returned by the bank as well as the late fee schedule provided herein. Excessive late fees or any returned checks will jeopardize a family's standing with Three Rivers Academy. Three Rivers Academy reserves the right to place an account on a "cash only" basis.
