In the English Department, we aim to encourage confident and assured communication skills as well as a wide experience of a variety of literary texts, both from the English Literary Heritage, as well as from a variety of cultures, promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity. We believe whole-heartedly in a comprehensive English curriculum, where all can achieve, engage and aspire.

Our aim is to equip students with the ability to use English competently in everyday situations but also to embrace the intrigue and enjoyment of language across time and genres.

Our curriculum is designed to weave the crucial threads of English through fiction and non-fiction texts, to empower students with the ability to recognise explicit and implicit meanings, to decode texts and provide them with essential skills for life. We also aim for students to aesthetically appreciate the beauty and power of high-quality literature.
